On a broad level, The Tatami Galaxy is a very Groundhog Day-esque story about repeating the same time frame over and over again, forcing the nameless protagonist (henceforth referred to as Watashi, per this show’s MAL page) to repeat his college years until he figures out how not to waste them. But if nothing else, this is gonna be a fascinating show to pick apart, and a fascinating challenge to see if I can hold onto this out-of-control train all the through to the end. Suffice to say, there’s a lot to talk about here, and I’m still not sure I didn’t miss out on a few key details thanks to how fast they were blowing by.
This is not a show content to let you sink into it at your own pace it comes out swinging for the fences and immediately stats lobbing 60-mph fastballs right at your face, and either your reflexes aren’t up to par or you’re going home with a couple black eyes and a broken tooth. It’s stupidly breakneck, and it barely dips below that level of frenetic energy for a second over the course of these first three episodes.
In the space of barely two minutes, we’ve zoomed in from a bird’s-eye map view of the Japanese landscape to a mysterious traveling ramen stand punctuated by an orgasmic moan, which I’m pretty such was a gag on the map’s lines resembling a vagina, been introduced to our nameless protagonist meeting a literal god, and had his entire scattershot passed spelled out in lurid detail by that same god, all spoken in a ridiculously rapid-fire patter so propulsive and speedy it almost makes Monogatari seem slow by comparison.
It’s clear from the opening moments of The Tatami Galaxy that you’re about to be taken on one hell of a ride.
